The Astrology of August is a journey towards growth— the messy and chaotic kind, full of energy going in all directions as we experience a collective metamorphosis towards our new world. It’s one of the most astrologically pivotal months in the overall shape of 2024. Moments of disruption and sudden change occur alongside mounting perspective shifts. The beginning of the month heralds some opportunities to set the stage to prepare your nervous system for what’s to come.
On August 4th there is a Mercury Retrograde alongside a New Moon in Leo. Venus also enters Virgo this same day. The Mercury retrograde will take hold of most of this month, but dominates this first week of the month, having us review and revisit certain themes, or do things over again, perhaps even being slowed down by miscommunications. This is the start of a new energy cycle, asking you to pause and assess how you want to step into the next chapter.
This New Moon in Leo is all about leadership and self-actualization. What change do you want to see in your life and the world? How can you lead with your heart and lean more fully into your heart’s desire? How can we shift the way we speak to others, or reorganize to create more a meaningful sense of order within our lives? What needs to be put into place? This is a great opportunity to plan and review your goals without expecting results right away. For now use this time to set your tasks and goals, put forth any propositions, and get certain rhythms or routines in place that you would like to carry forward.
This New Moon asks you to let go of whatever might be holding you back from the next phase of your life so that you can fully be present in embarking on those new projects or identities that are more in tune with your calling. How can you more fully step into your Self? If you could be doing anything you wanted, regardless of what anyone thought, what would that be?
New Moons are a time of introspection and intention setting as we plant the seeds for the next cycle. So what is your gift to offer the world? How can you shine more of your light out there? What are you putting out into the world and co-creating with the universe and divine forces?
Change is inevitable as we are bound to embark on a wild ride towards the middle of this month. There are so many things happening August, you will likely feel tested, as we are being called to occupy a higher frequency and live life more according to your higher self.
This month is incredibly dynamic. There are several very important transits stacking up and overlapping this month that make August one of the most powerful months of the year. A greater theme that stands out to me is that we are asked to let go of old stories about ourselves that we may be carrying so that we can rise into the future way of being— more in accordance of what we really want and need to fulfill our soul’s calling. Many people are being asked to leave behind old jobs, old relationships, old ways of life, or old ways of thinking about themselves within the framework of their lives in order to embark on a greater purpose for themselves and the collective.
This month also appears as a “face off” between the benefic and malefic planets. Venus and Jupiter are coming into alignment with Saturn and Mars, in a configuration that pulls us out of sorts. This is particularly true from about August 10-22. In the dates leading up to the very big Aquarius Full moon on the 20th, there will be a T-square of Jupiter conjunct Mars in Gemini, squaring Venus in Virgo, squaring Saturn in Pisces. This happens exactly at the moment when the full moon is squaring Uranus and the Sun is conjunct Mercury retrograde. Any one of these transits would be noteworthy, but the fact that they happen simultaneously is something quite astounding.
The energy is shifting and building towards something unpredictable and important. My advice is to prepare yourself for change, be ready to ride the waves, take hold of your life in ways that push you out of your comfort zone, and DO take care of your nervous system in the beginning of this month. Try not to plan or schedule too much in mid August, if you can help it.

The systems that we rely upon are being shaken up and it will be helpful to prepare for changes. Do what you can to mitigate any foreseen disruptions that are nagging at you. For example, have extra cash on hand, stock up on extra food and fuel, both practically and metaphorically. Takes things slow, act intentionally, listen to your heart’s guidance and work with others towards your goal. Reach out for support when you need it, we are in this together.
